"wнo are yoυ, тнaт do noт ĸnow yoυr нιѕтory?"
Homeless and abandoned at a young age, the child Alex was raised in a tribe from the old Four Corners. Adaptable and driven to work to salve boredom, the teenage Alex joined the Mojave Express as a pack mule. Quickly rising through the ranks from sheer efficiency, when Alex became a full courier, he took on a new name to fit the occupation: Alex Seattle Geer, courier and problem solver extraordinaire.
In the twelve years experience that Alex gained being a courier, he learned a variety of things. Languages, robotics, and Robco technology are his specialty. Alex had been to many areas of the West, the most experience coming from his home Four Corner territories: Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona.
In the cold recesses of lost memory, Alex traveled to the Divide, in the remains of the old world Death Valley. It was there he delivered an innocuous package, and blindly sealed the fates of those who resided there. But lacking long-term memory or not, that was something Alex Seattle Geer didn't yet know.
"тнoυgнт carryιng тнaт cнιp woυld end yoυ, no... yoυ goт lιveѕ ιn yoυ, нard тo ĸιll. ѕтorмѕ, вυlleтѕ... ѕand and wιnd, yeт ѕтιll yoυ walĸ. ғor now."
2281. Halfway through his thirty-second year, Alex accepted a job another courier had passed on. A simple delivery of a simple item, and yet that wasn't it at all. From Arizona, he traveled to Primm in California, taking the package nearly on to Nevada before Alex was caught by a man named Benny and his muscle outside Goodsprings. The Platinum Chip that Alex was to deliver was taken, and as a last kiss goodbye, Benny put two bullets in Alex's head.
Dead and buried, or at least that's what they thought. Dug out by a Securitron named Victor, Alex's comatose form was revived by Goodsprings' Doc Mitchell, a miracle worker from Vault 21. Eight days after he was shot, Alex was able to move around as normal as he could before--minus a chunk of his long-term memory. Events were still there, but all of the details surrounding them were gone. And his younger years had vanished entirely. All Alex held clear were the fact of a contract still open--and the man who had the audacity to shoot him and not finish the job.
The town that had sheltered him was in dire straits; a gang of convicts turned terrorists tapping at their doors. Alex ferreted out the strengths of the town, and banded them to stand together--creating an absolute victory against the nearby Powder Gangers, one that left the town loyal and willing to help. Given supplies and advice, Alex set out to find the man who shot him, and the reasons why.
Nearby Primm only held more mysteries and murders. The Mojave Express branch in the city revealed only facts of other Couriers being murdered, all with a similar circumstance: They were hired by the same person, and all carried casino items. There was another fact to learn in Primm--the courier who was to hold the Platinum Chip had passed on the job, but only after seeing Alex's name next on the list. Courier Six had disappeared, to let Alex take the fallout. With nothing further, the town mentioned Benny had been seen in Boulder City farther on. Alex took a list of items that was needed to fix a broken eyebot on the branch's counter, fortified himself, and continued onward.
Boulder City was a long ways off, though, and closer to Primm was Nipton. Once a bustling trading post, the town was strangely silent when Alex drew close; silent but for the flames that still devoured part of it, and a man running from them, yelling about a lottery. When Alex tried to question him further, the man took off, and after a moment's delay, Alex shot him dead, finding the lottery ticket the man had claimed. Within the town were men dying on crosses and men dressed in skirts and leather. "Caesar's Legion," was their claim to fame, and they boasted of cleansing the immoral town and placed it on Alex's shoulders to only tell the tale of what had happened there. Alex agreed he would, and the Legion was satisfied--until he opened fire on them, gunning them down to a man. Weary, Alex continued, noting NCR outposts and the tired, distrustful men inside. He only had eyes for his road, though, and continued until the next town--Novac.
Having a few basic problems, Alex solved them for caps and resources--including getting rid of a schizophrenic Nightkin with a penchant for bramin. While doing so, Alex made the acquaintance of Old Lady Gibson--a trader and weapon repairer, alone but for her dogs--and Craig Boone. Originally, Alex had been pointed to Boone by Boone's old friend in order to see what had changed with the man--the truth was far worse. Instead of sulking over a woman who left him, as Alex had been led to believe, Boone had been mourning his wife and unborn child who had been sold into slavery and killed. She had been sold into slavery by someone in the town, he knew--but who it was, he couldn't say. Alex took up the path of unclaimed vengeance in an attempt to find Boone peace. By slick words and quicker fingers, Alex found evidence of the culprit, and led them to Boone to be taken down. After, the man spoke as if to continue his living dead lifestyle, but Alex convinced him to find another path of life. A prior "hero" to the NCR, Boone agreed as long as they were killing Legionaries, and offered Alex a beret in thanks for his friendship.
The path to Benny led forward, but Alex hated leaving mysteries unsolved--and the eyebot in Primm was one of them. Getting the final item he needed in Novac, Alex headed back the way he came--and returned to Novac with an eyebot in tow. Designation Eyebot Duraframe Subject E: ED-E. Something that exuded more life than most living creatures Alex had come across. ED-E attached himself to Alex, and Alex found himself not minding.
"тaĸe care wнaт yoυ do нere, and wнo yoυ lιѕтen тo. ѕoмe тнιngѕ are вeѕт leғт вυrιed wιтн тнe old world."
In Novac again, the strange duo picked up Boone and headed to the nearby REPCONN test site, to make good on a promise Alex had made to the town. To take care of the ghouls that had infested the place--one way or the other. The feral ghouls reported were also with just normal ghouls--people, and the religious sort that Alex had seen murdered along the road. The Bright Brotherhood had taken over REPCONN, and Jason Bright, prophet and seer, was at the heart of it. Planning a Great Journey to the Far Beyond, an irradiated mecca for ghouls, he was planning to rebuild the rockets and head off there-- It would have been so hilarious as to not stop laughing for a year's time, except they had this scientist. And really, their methods weren't all wrong.
The problem the ghouls had--and therefore, the people of Novac--was that they couldn't continue. A group of Nightkin had plugged up part of the building, ruining the plan, and of course,
So the rockets red glare and all of that. It's a wonderful memory, of ghouls in space ships blasting off through the stratosphere. It makes one believe they can do anything. Even find the asshole who shot them and finish the task, either way.
He probably whistled as he left REPCONN. Boone probably made a disgusted noise and ED-E would have beeped in delight.
But right next door there was another building, a creation of science and war. HELIOS One. Alex didn't know what it represented at the time, not like he knows now, but in that moment, it was just another mystery to find out the details of. One that had the NCR interested, and an idiot inside playing games. Thankfully, there was a more intelligent individual inside--Ignacio Rivas, a member of the Followers of the Apocalypse, and someone who Alex found interesting. Someone that started something inside of Alex Seattle Geer. He asked him to divert power from the solar plant, to give it to everyone in the Mojave. Explained about the weapon this plant was truly built for, and the damage it could cause. Why would this man trust Alex with this information, this request?
"I'm a man of letters. I'd be torn to pieces by the security system they have in that tower. I'd never reach the mainframe. But eventually the NCR will, or if not them, Caesar's Legion. They will use this place for war. Because the possibility exists you might do anything else, you're the only choice I have."
But that, is a story for another day. [TBA]
